You're writing a story. A book, perhaps. You've already got the protagonist and the antagonist, along with his 31'st favorite song and that park she went to as a kid. Things are going great! Your story is interesting, well-fleshed, and finally going somewhere. Then BOOM. Tragedy strikes. *gasp*
You get another story idea.
It happens to everyone. All the time. But this new story! It's so interesting! It's so great! It would practically write itself! You're tempted to drop the current one, (just temporarily, right?) and write this new story. You'll get back to the old one soon! This, dear reader, is where you are so very wrong.
Consider your current story for a moment. How much time have you put into it? Aren't you just a little bit in love with it? You're hoping that, just maybe, this story will actually get published. Or, even better, actually written! Guilt trip, I know. But still. It's an entire world. And it's depending on you! But OH.... this new one.
My advice? Exercise it! Don't bother turning this new one into a full story. Don't pursue it. But don't forget it either! That stack of gorgeous notebooks you have, but want to wait to use? Pick out a mid-sized one, and write the idea down. First, a summary. Then the first name of the characters you've already thought up for it. It doesn't matter how short or long it is. Just get it on paper and off your brain. This notebook will probably take a while to fill. Potentially years. But don't abandon it. It will become a great source of inspiration. Any writing prompts you like? Stick 'em in the notebook! This will do you a world of good. Not only will it save that brilliant idea, but it will also help keep your imagination from going stagnant.
Don't forget how much you love the story you're writing. And don't abandon it yet. Especially not just for that shiny new idea that looks so fun. Keep it up!
